We’ll debunk this myth and provide insight into advanced word study, complex language structures, and rigorous teaching strategies for reading comprehension in the upper grades.

We’ll also consider multilingual scaffolds like translanguaging, wait time, and visual anchors that ensure every student can succeed.

Building for Literacy Success: Vocabulary Instruction That Makes a Difference

We will dive into evidence-based, low-prep, high-impact strategies that empower learners with the phonics, morphology, and etymology knowledge they need to learn and use vocabulary. We will also consider the value that multilingualism adds to reading and comprehending complex texts.

Teaching for Transfer and Application: The Role of Instruction, Practice, and Feedback for Reading Fluency

○ Audience: K-8 Teachers / Coordinators
○ Description: Let’s talk about fluency. How do we move young readers from individual sounds to blending words, phrases, and sentences? How do we move older readers from choppy word calling to the automaticity and expression needed for comprehension? Students need to be shown how to be successful, not told. After that, they need a lot more practice and feedback than you might think. We’ll break down fluency- accuracy, automaticity, and prosody- and show participants highly-effective instruction in action.

The Reading-Writing Connection for ELA and beyond: Raise the Bar and Students Will Grow

○ Audience: Grades 4-12 ELA and content-area Teachers / Coordinators
○ Description: “Reading is breathing in; writing is breathing out.” Pam Allyn. Reading and writing are the vehicle for learning in every subject area. This session invited ELA and subject specialists (math, science, social studies, PE, the arts, and beyond) to consider the language and literacy of their subject area and to learn literacy instruction tips and tricks that will help content knowledge soar.
