Celebrating Diversity and Connection in First Grade at ISSOSUA

In our first-grade classroom at the International School of Sosúa, every day is a celebration of diversity, curiosity, and connection. Our students come from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and this beautiful mix creates a learning environment rich in empathy and understanding. Whether we are sharing stories from home during Morning Meeting or exploring global perspectives through literature, our classroom becomes a place where every child’s voice matters and every experience is valued.

One of our favorite projects this year has been Peaceful Playgrounds, where students learned about inclusion, cooperation, and kindness through play and project based learning. Together, we discussed what it means to be a good friend, practiced using kind words, and explored strategies to solve small problems peacefully. Students worked in teams to create a playground where everyone could play, ensuring that everyone was included and no one was left out. Through this project, they discovered that play is not just fun—it’s an opportunity to practice empathy, share leadership, and build a sense of belonging. Watching our first graders apply these lessons in real-time, including inviting others to join or helping solve disagreements kindly, has been incredibly rewarding.

At ISSOSUA, I feel deeply grateful to work in a community that not only celebrates academic growth but also nurtures the heart.
The diversity of our students, families, and staff reminds us daily that learning is not just about what we know—it’s about who we become together.
