Immersive Educational Technology and Student Engagement in Early Childhood Education

This month, Early Childhood Education students at Colegio Interamericano in Guatemala experienced a truly out of this world learning opportunity. We transformed the classroom into a dynamic and immersive space by inviting ¨Planetario Cosmos Eseducativo¨ for Grade 1 Science students. We explored constellations, planets and astronomy in an immersive learning environment that connects science, steam and educational technology.

Teachers reflected that student engagement was significantly higher in this fusion of multiple learning styles combining visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Students demonstrated their understanding of astronomy by building moon phases with oreos and sharing collaborative student learning in a digital class journal shared with families. We noticed a significant increase in positive family engagement with the videos we shared in the digital class journal of the immersive learning experiences.
The immersive planetarium experience is a powerful example of how educational technology can enhance student engagement and support innovation in Education. Integrating immersive experiences into Early Childhood Education is reimagining what classroom environments can look like and ensuring that students experience meaningful, real world learning and innovation. Immersive technology can transform classrooms into spaces of discovery and has definitely proved a success this year in Early Childhood Education.
