Making Data Human at ISSOSUA

Making Data Human at ISSOSUA

“Without data, you are just another person with an opinion.” W. Edwards Deming

At the International School of Sosúa, this quote becomes a guiding reminder every fall, especially as MAP Growth season approaches. I genuinely enjoy data and, quite honestly, only sometimes understand it, particularly on those rare days when every chart cooperates and I feel like a data wizard for a full ten seconds. I share this quote with teachers often, and by now they all know that whenever I say it, a MAP conversation is probably about to appear out of thin air.

This year, our team embraced MAP not only by reviewing scores, but by reaching out directly to families and students with personal messages, video calls, and conversations that clarified what MAP truly measures and what it does not. We even held instructional meetings on campus, led by Mr. Ruiz, our Head of School, to deepen our shared understanding and strengthen alignment across the community. Our aim was transparency, reassuring students that MAP is a flashlight and not a spotlight, and reminding families that assessment is a tool for progress rather than pressure.

One moment that stood out to me came during a conversation with a new 10th grade student who had recently joined ISSOSUA. She had been worried that her MAP score defined her readiness for the more rigorous classes she was stepping into. After walking her through what a
RIT score represents, she paused and said, “Oh... so this isn’t about being good or bad, it’s about what I’m ready to learn next.” That small shift in understanding completely changed her posture, and she left the room feeling confident instead of overwhelmed. That is what making data human looks like.

What made me most proud was seeing teachers take ownership of the narrative. They made MAP human. They explained RIT scores in student friendly language, celebrated the glows, and strategized the grows. Families were pleasantly surprised to receive individualized notes that highlighted strengths and offered clear guidance to support learning at home, during school, and beyond. It has truly been all hands-on deck across our community.

This approach has already had a visible impact. Parents have shared that the personalized communication reduced their anxiety and gave them a clearer understanding of how to support their children, and teachers have commented on feeling more aligned as a team. As a school leader I could not be prouder. The energy at ISSOSUA reflects a shift toward collective responsibility and growth minded collaboration. Our teachers did not just share data, they extended connection. They did not just explain numbers, they built trust. At ISSOSUA, it is the relationships behind the data
that truly move learning forward.
