Project Lead The Way: A Partnership in Support of Hands-On Learning

By: Anahi Paredes, Curriculum Director, American School of Tegucigalpa

In an effort to strengthen our STEM curriculum, the American School of Tegucigalpa (AST) has partnered with Project Lead The Way (PLTW), a nonprofit organization founded by educators to prepare students with the technical knowledge, transferable skills, and confidence to thrive in a rapidly changing world. The PLTW curriculum emphasizes hands-on, problem-based learning—an approach that aligns closely with AST’s commitment to providing authentic and meaningful learning experiences.

Since 2019, AST has implemented a series of PLTW courses spanning grades 6–12, including Engineering Design and Development, Computer Science Principles, Principles of Engineering, Introduction to Engineering Design, App Creators, and Algebra Advantage. Through these courses, students explore pathways in engineering, computer science, and mathematics.

From designing solar cars and constructing compound machines to coding conveyor belts and producing 3D-printed school models, students apply critical thinking and creativity to real-world challenges. This partnership continues to inspire future innovators to consider STEM careers while equipping them with the skills and mindset necessary for success in the modern economy.
